VCU Biology Drop-in Advising

Happy New Year and welcome to the Spring 2025 semester at VCU!

Only during the Add/Drop week will the Biology Advising unit offer drop-in advising sessions in-person and virtually. We offer these drop-in sessions to help you resolve quick issues, address last-minute questions, and provide guidance on specific registration concerns and issues before the end of the add/drop period. The last day to make changes to your schedule will be Sunday, January 19th

Please note that VCU will be closed on Monday, January 20th in observation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The date and times of drop-in sessions and the instructions on accessing them are below.

Drop-in advising will be available 10AM - 12PM and 2PM - 4PM on

  • Monday, January 13
  • Tuesday, January 14
  • Wednesday, January 15
  • Thursday, January 16
  • Friday, January 17

Students should come prepared with their V-number and specific questions for advising. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to meet with a specific advisor, but you will have the opportunity to meet with the next available Biology advisor.

In-Person Advising:

  1. All in-person sessions will happen in the Trani Life Sciences building (1000 West Cary Street) in the Biology Advising Center (Suites 216, on the second floor).
  2. Check in by scanning the QR code in the second-floor lobby (near double-blue doors).
  3. Then wait in the lobby area. The next available biology advisor will greet you in the waiting area and bring you back to their office.

Virtual Advising:

  1. Join our virtual advising session via Zoom from you desktop or mobile app at https://vcu.zoom.us/j/82421570867
  2. Upon logging in, you will enter our waiting room and soon be greeted by a drop-in moderator. If the drop-in time has yet to begun, you will need to wait until the drop-in moderator has started the meeting.
  3. The drop-in moderator will place you in a private breakout room.
  4. Then a biology advisor will meet you in your private breakout room as soon as possible.
  5. If you leave your room before meeting with an advisor, you will have to re-enter the meeting at the end of the queue.
  6. When you and your adviser are finished, you can leave the meeting.

Special Notes

Student must join the Virtual Office Hours Advising from a desktop application or the Zoom Mobile App and log in to their VCU Zoom account (your Zoom email/password is the same as your VCU email/password). Students who attempt to join the meeting as "guests" or who attempt to join in their browser will not be able to meet with an advisor.

Overrides:

To request a course override, please fill out the Biology override form found here.

Please note that size overrides are not typically given, and an alternative course should be found if a course is full.

Account Holds:

Please note that biology advisors cannot remove holds from student accounts - you must resolve your registration hold by contacting the appropriate office that placed the hold on your account.

If you have a hold on your account, you can still drop a class - just not via e-services. You can drop from courses by either going in person at the Student Services Center in Harris Hall during their office hours (https://ssc.vcu.edu/) or by emaling rar@vcu.edu with your V-number and the information for the course you wish to drop- including the course number and either the section number or CRN for the course. You must email from a VCU email address and your email must be received by rar@vcu.edu prior to 11:59 PM on Sunday, January 19th, 2025.

To drop all courses prior to the start of the spring semester, use the Enrollment Cancellation Request Form found here.

Additional registration forms can be accessed here.
